All of the dental treatment options, tooth extraction (along with dental implants) has always been considered as one of the scariest and painful procedures around. This might be due to the scary childhood memories of losing our baby teeth or the general conception of a forceful image of tooth removal.Whatever the reason is, tooth extraction should not be feared and patients should realize that tooth extraction is only performed as a last result. Every dentist will try their best to not remove the entirety of their patient's tooth. But, if it's a necessity, it should be done to protect the general health of the mouth itself.

Reasons For Tooth Extraction

Our permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime with us. However, there are also reasons for them to be extracted. Some of these reasons can be more common than others, such as the extraction of wisdom teeth. While others can be more problem based;Decay: A badly decayed tooth can cause the tooth to lose its function and cause numerous other dental problems. An extraction might need to solve this issueDamage/trauma: If a tooth gets damaged to a point of no return. The extraction will be used to change the tooth. An implant or a bridge treatment can be used to cover that tooth’s gap.Crowded mouth: There are often times where extraction will be needed for the preparation of braces/Invisalign. This is due to a patient not having any room in his mouth for other teeth to come out.Gum diseases: If a gum disease like gingivitis lefts untreated for too long, it can evolve into periodontitis. In this case, an extraction will be necessary to prevent the infection from crossover other tooth.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

First things first, the patient will schedule an appointment with the dentist to understand the situation. While visiting the clinic, the dentist will decide on the number of teeth to be extracted and their locations. Some extractions are easier than others and this is dependent on their location and tooth’s health. At the start of the procedure, the dentist will numb the area with the help of local anesthesia injections. The amount of anesthesia needed will be dependent on the amount of tooth that the dentist will extract. More extraction requires a stronger anesthetic.

After the anesthesia takes its effect, the dentist will start the procedure of extraction. If it’s a simple extraction, the dentist will use dental tools to loosen the tooth and remove it completely. If it’s more complicated than that, a surgical extraction will be necessary. This can be done with the help of creating a hole at the gumline and completing the extraction from the inside. These type of complicated extractions are not only more expensive but also takes a much longer surgery time. Once the extraction is completed, your dentist will stop the excessive bleeding with the use of a pad.

After the completion of the extraction, however, it is expected to feel some type of pain, soreness and discomfort. With the help of the painkillers, the pain will be reduced to minimal levels.Patients can go back to their normal selves after a week.
